The Banaras Hindu University has received a Rupeess 10 lakh donation to establish two scholarships named after Late Pt Ganga Ratan Pandey and his wife Jagrani Pandey. Their sons Prakash and Arun Pandey made the donation to honour their parents as part of the university's Pratidana initiative. The scholarships will be available to MA Hindi students on a merit-based basis and will be awarded to one male and one female student.
Pt Ganga Ratan Pandey is a BHU alumnus who earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees there. In 1942, he was an MA Hindi student who was imprisoned for his involvement in the Quit India Movement. He was a devoted supporter of Pt Madan Mohan Malaviya and actively participated in fundraising efforts for the university. As a writer, he made significant contributions to Hindi literature. He wrote numerous books, including easy, story collections, poetry, plays, historical novels, songs, and even translated various volumes on political science, foreign affairs, education, and other topics.
VC Sudhir Kumar Jain started the Pratidana programme with the goal of supporting merit-based scholarships, need-based financial aid, expanding learning opportunities, promoting excellence in teaching, and enabling impactful research, among other things.
