The National Testing Agency (NTA) issued the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) UG 2023 results on July 15, 2023. Students who appeared in exams from May 21 to July 5, 2023, can check their results and download their scorecards by visiting the official website.
Following the announcement of the results, UGC chief Professor Jagadesh Kumar described the CUET UG mark normalisation process. The equi-percentile system was used to estimate students' performance, and the marks indicated in the scorecard are normalised scores. Students are perplexed as to how the NTA will compare students' performance on a common scale given that the tests for a particular topic have been held on different days for over a month.
When clarifying the marking, the UGC head noted that admissions must be made based on a score directly comparing the performance of the students. He went on to say that because the CUET exams are held on several days and in multiple sessions for the same subject, multiple percentiles are generated for each group of students, which is why score normalisation is essential.
Equi-Percentile System - Explained
The equi-percentile system computes each student's percentile. The total marks are calculated by comparing the raw marks of the candidates to the raw marks of other candidates in the same session. The process is then repeated for each session over the course of several days for the same subject.
The percentile is equal and transformed to normalised marks, and sessions with fewer students are combined with a smaller session group. The campaigners' normalised grades achieved using the equi-percentile approach in different sessions can be used in the same way as raw marks from a traditional single-session exam.
