COMMON LAW ADMISSION TEST (CLAT)

Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a centralized national level entrance test conducted for admissions to twenty-two National Law Universities (NLU) in India for Undergraduate (UG) & post Graduate (PG) courses. Most private and self-financed graduate schools in India likewise utilize these scores for law affirmations. COMMON LAW ADMISSION TEST (CLAT)

Candidates willing to apply for CLAT UG Examination are required to fulfil certain conditions to be eligible for it. The candidate who does not satisfy the Eligibility criteria like Age, Minimum educational qualification etc., their candidature shall be rejected by the authorities.
The criteria for eligibility CLAT UG are decided by the conduction body itself.

The candidate’s eligibility for CLAT UG Examination is based on the fulfilment of the following conditions:-

1- Nationality

2- CLAT UG: Age Limit

3- CLAT UG: Educational Qualifications

CLAT UG EXAMINATION: NATIONALITY

The candidate must be :-

1- Citizen of India, or

2- A subject of Nepal, or a subject of Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

3- A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

CLAT UG  EXAMINATION: AGE LIMIT

As per the revised standards, there will be no upper age limit for UG Program in CLAT.

CLAT UG  EXAMINATION: EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION

1- As regards minimum percentage of marks in the qualifying examination (i.e., 10+2 or an equivalent examination), the candidates must have secured :
a) Forty five percent (45%) marks or its equivalent grade in case of candidates belonging to General / OBC / PWD / NRI / PIO / OCI categories.
b) Forty Percent (40%) marks or equivalent in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST categories.

2- Candidates who are appearing in the qualifying examination are also eligible to appear in CLAT examination. However, they shall be required to produce an evidence of their passing the qualifying examination at the time of admission, failing which they shall lose their right to be considered for admission.

3- The result of the qualifying examination (i.e., 10+2) shall be submitted by the candidate at the time of admission failing which the candidate shall be ineligible for admission to the Course.

Break of Tie

In case of equal marks, the break of tie shall be by the following procedure and order as under :

1- Higher marks in the component / section on legal aptitude in the CLAT exam;

2- Higher age;

3- Computerised draw of lots.

Overall, the GK portion of CLAT 2021 was moderately easy. In comparison to 2020 where the pattern for GK had changed, this time students were prepared for the type of passages to come. The passages were on the following topics:

Logical Reasoning

The questions for all the passages covered almost all the critical reasoning topics such as assumptions, conclusions/inferences, strengthening and weakening of arguments, etc. While some passages were lengthy, others were of moderate length. Overall, the logical reasoning section was a little surprising since it did not have a single analytical reasoning question. Therefore, topics such as syllogisms, seating arrangements, puzzles, input-output, etc. were completely absent from the paper. The overall difficulty level was moderate. The Logical Reasoning section consisted of 6 Passages with 5 questions each. The passages were on the following topics:

Quantitative Techniques

The paper did not involve any complicated questions or higher-level discussions. They were based largely on percentages, and a basic understanding of percentages would have been enough to solve the problems, as long as adequate conceptual clarity existed on the same. The profit and loss based set too would have been adequately solved with a fundamental understanding of profit and loss. A careful approach would ensure full marks there. The questions were based on the following topics:

SECTION WISE ANALYSIS

English

1- English section was Moderate on the difficulty level.

2- There were 30 questions under 6 passages. The passages were reported to be a bit long but the questions were not difficult to answer.

3- Passages were story-based and a few of them were on Bois Locker Room Controversy, Virtual Reality, and Climate Change.

4- Students had to answer the questions based on word- meanings, synonyms, etc. 

Legal Aptitude

1- The Legal Reasoning section had a total of 39 Questions.

2- Candidates had to go through 8 passages and as per the experts they were more basic than knowledge-based.

3- Passages touched topics such as the issue of obscenity, Vizag gas leak, the principle of Natural Justice, impact of COVID 19, Article 20 (1): Ex post facto laws, the  lynching of Palghar District, Arnab Goswami vs Union of India and Common intention.

4- This section was also considered as Moderate to Difficult.

Logical Reasoning

1- The Logical Reasoning section of CLAT 2020 saw a total of 30 questions.

2- Only 2 questions were from Analytical Reasoning while the rest 25+3 came from critical reasoning.

3- Issues such as social journalism, the anti-alcohol movement, work from home during the corona pandemic, coding-decoding, matrix puzzle, etc. were touched in this section.

4- Questions were easy to attempt but consumed time.

Quantitative Techniques

1- Minimum questions arose from the Quantitative Techniques section.

2- 15 questions were asked under 3 sets. Each set carried 5 questions.

3- One set was reported to be incorrect by the experts while the rest 2 sets were easy to solve.

General Knowledge and Current Affairs

1- The Current Affairs & General Knowledge section of the CLAT 2020 was different than the usual CLAT exam.

2- 36 Questions popped up from 7 passages.

3- Most of the questions and passages were based on recent events and happenings.

4- The difficulty level of this section has been recorded between Moderate to Difficult.

5- Students complained that the questions required factors and reasons affecting the event. They were not straightforward.

6- Like many other sections, Current Affairs & General Knowledge was reported to as time-consuming.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

Major Highlights

1- Less number of questions as compared to last year.

 2- Duration of the exam remains the same therefore sufficient time to attempt the paper.

3- Comprehension-based questions in all sections.

4- Overall the level of the exam was moderate but lengthy.

5- The legal and logical reasoning sections didn’t need much critical reasoning skills to answer questions in these sections.

STEP 4- A registration form will open where you will have to enter registration details like name, mobile number, email id. Also, select and confirm a password for the candidate account.

2.  Filling up the CLAT UG application form: Here enter personal, academic, and contact details. You will also be required to select the program of study (UG or PG), and enter preferred NLUs in the order of priority from the drop-down menu.

3. Upload of Prescribed Documents & Images (Photographs and Scanned Signatures): Scanned copies of signature, photograph, and other documents in the prescribed specification have to be uploaded.

4. Pay the Examination Fee: After submitting the application form, the candidate has to next pay the application or exam fee, which is category-specific. Candidates can pay the application fee in online mode using (debit card/credit card/net banking). 

5. Print the Confirmation page: The last step is to take four printouts of the confirmation page, after successful payment of CLAT UG application fees. Candidates must keep this acknowledgment page till the admission process is over.

STEP 1- Visit the official website of the exam.

Candidates can follow the steps mentioned below to download the result of CLAT.

1. Visit the official website of CLAT 

2. Click on the result link given in the notification section

3. Login using mobile number and password

4. The CLAT scorecard will be displayed on the screen

5. Download and save the scorecard for future reference

Candidates will find the following details in their CLAT results:

1. Candidate’s name, date of birth, and parents name

2. Application number of the candidate.

3. CLAT admit card number

4. CLAT marks

5. All India rank

6. Category rank

7. NRI rank (only if applied under NRI category)

8. NRI sponsored rank (if applicable)

CLAT UG COUNSELLING PROCEDURE

1. Candidates will receive an invite to register for the counseling process through SMS / email. The counseling information will be uploaded on the Consortium website as well. Candidates can log in to their CLAT account and register for the counseling process.

2. The registration process consists of Two steps:

STEP – 1 Update your NLU preferences

You can provide a fresh set of NLU preferences. You can choose to provide all the NLUs OR you can choose to give preferences of only those NLUs in which you are interested. Candidates are strongly advised to give a minimum of five preferences.

STEP – 2 Make an online payment of INR 50,000/

Candidates will have to make an online payment to Consortium of INR 50,000/- to register for counseling through their login id on the Consortium website. Candidates are requested to make the payment before the last date. Requests for payments after the last date will not be considered in any circumstance.

Now the Consortium has reduced the Counselling fee from 50,000/- to Rs.30,000/- for the General category candidates and Rs.20,000/- for ST/SC/OBC/BC/EWS/PWD and other reservation candidates.

Note: ONLY THOSE CANDIDATES WHO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE COUNSELLING REGISTRATION PROCESS WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR ALLOTMENT OF SEAT.
